Le rapport chiffré des femmes au maquillage - Enquête Pomponne 2020
Hello Pomponnette,

If you're one of the 162 women who responded to our survey, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It allowed us to learn more about the relationship women - including you! - have with makeup.
If you're just curious - welcome :) - you'll discover the key figures from our survey and better understand how French women view makeup.

Before sharing the results of our report, we'd like to remind you of the definition of the word "maquillage" (makeup) as found in the Larousse dictionary. - As for "Robert", that's reserved for Charline's last name... -

Maquillage (makeup), masculine noun: The act of enhancing the aesthetic qualities of the face and concealing its imperfections with the help of colored cosmetic products.
But Pomponne's definition is more like:
Well-formulated products that respect the environment and care for your skin, to bring a smile to your face :)

Girls just wanna have makeup

First striking Pomponne figure: 94% of French women wear makeup before leaving their homes. Whether it's just a touch of mascara or the application of an ultra-natural BB cream, makeup is a - very - common practice in France.

While makeup may seem superficial to some, one thing is certain: it has the power to help women feel good and more confident. Indeed, for 96% of respondents, wearing makeup puts them in a good mood, and for 97%, it helps them feel more beautiful.
We could therefore add a notion of well-being to the definition of "makeup", promoting makeup and no longer equating it with a simple aesthetic act of camouflage.

It doesn't take much to be happy, just consume better - even in your makeup bag -

The Yuka* wave being what it is, 82% of women are concerned about the composition of their cosmetic products.
But while 83% of them have realized that makeup can be made of controversial ingredients for health and/or the environment, only 37% pay as much attention to the composition of their makeup as to their skincare products.
As proof, 72% of them haven't paid attention to the composition of their current makeup.

Given that 100% would like their makeup products to be green & clean, why does their way of consuming better stop when it comes to their makeup?

Why don't women consume better, even in their makeup bags?

The answer is dissatisfaction: only 1 in 10 respondents is satisfied with the current offer of green and clean makeup - for those not "fluent in English": this means "natural makeup without controversial ingredients" -.
In the TOP 3 "reasons why" there are:
  • the lack of appeal of green & clean makeup brands: the survey respondents have not found THE brand that makes them want to take the leap to natural makeup. - It's that simple! -
  • poor performance: according to them, natural and clean makeup often doesn't last as long, the colors lack intensity and vibrancy,...and they are not willing to compromise!
  • the lack of aesthetic packaging. Yes, because they don't want to be forced into the "cliché" of natural... - They want to be mindful of the planet, but paper-mâché, no thanks... -

- Where are the women - who buy makeup?

- Yes, we absolutely need to answer Patrick Juvet here - For 74%, they buy in physical stores, and it should be noted that 26% of them are multi-channel, meaning they buy both online and in-store.
The survey highlighted that women go to stores to test products, but ultimately, this test is not conclusive since more than 1 in 2 women have already been disappointed with the result of a product purchased after a successful in-store test.
And a major revolution of 2020: French women say they are ready, for 83% of them, to buy online if they are well guided.

There you have it, Pomponnette, our survey holds no more secrets for you! A huge thank you again to all who responded and allowed us to write this report. Je viens de tomber sur votre article, et suis d’accord sur certains points : Moi, je suis de celle qui achète plus en ligne qu’en boutique, c’est plus simple et moins embêtant.
